Jessica's Country Album Slated for Fall Release

It's official. Jessica Simpson's Do You Know will be out on Sept. 9. The tracklist includes a duet with Dolly Parton (written by Dolly herself), "Remember That" and "Pray Out Loud." A step away from the bubblegum limelight, it looks like Jessica may have a bright future in country.

And if she hasn't done enough, she'll be launching a new fragrance, Fancy, next month.

Santogold and Diplo Make a Mixtape

(Santogold posing with M.I.A.)

He's remixed with M.I.A.; so why not team up with Santogold? In a new (recently released) mixtape, Diplo and the eclectic Brooklyn breakout have remixed Santogold's self-titled debut as well as tracks from Three 6 Mafia, Aretha Franklin and B-52's—just to name a few. And what's even better is you can listen to it now (thanks to NME).

Download the mixtape here.

The Many Sides of Baba O'Riley

Since VH1 honored The Who last week, I've decided to honor their song, "Baba O'Riley" this week.

Blue Man Group reinvents the hit.

Known best for covering this song, Pearl Jam rocks Canada in August '93.

Nirvana did it in '91.

And more recently Idol winner, David Cook pays homage to the Brit band.

Jonas Brothers Set to Play VMAs

It's official! The Jonas Brothers have graduated from the teenybopper pop that they were a year ago to MTV. Not to say that these guys weren't good before. But being the first act to be invited to perform at this year's 2008 MTV VMAs is quite the honor. With a new album dropping next month and a sold out tour, '08 looks like the year of the Jonas.

Speaking of the VMAs, the awards show will be live on Sept. 7 from Hollywood. And unlike past VMAs, this year you (the viewer) can vote for your faves. Just make sure to sign up for an MTV login if you haven't already to make your ballot count.

Fabrizio Moretti Brings in a Little Joy

Like his fellow bandmate Julian, Fabrizio Moretti has started working on a new side project, but this one looks to be something a bit more long term. The Strokes' drummer has teamed up with his girlfriend, Binki Shapiro, and Brazilian singer-songwriter Rodrigo Amarante to form a band tentatively called Little Joy. The band's album on Rough Trade Records is set for a fall release in the U.S.

VH1 Honors The Who

The Who is one of most legendary bands to come out of the UK in the 60's. Part of the British invasion with the Rolling Stones and The Beatles, these guys showed the raw onstage emotion that we equate rock with today. With hits like "I Predict a Riot" and "My Generation", their lyrics are amazing and at times prolific. And let's face it, they know how to rock out. "Baba O'Riley" (aka "Teenage Wasteland") has been covered by Pearl Jam, Nirvana and even this year's American Idol, David Cook.

For all their music and just being who they are, The Who was honored by VH1 Rock Honors with a concert featuring special guests Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Incubus, Flaming Lips and Tenacious D. The show will premiere on VH1 tomorrow (Thursday, July 17) at 9 p.m.

Here's a clip of the Foo Fighters' perfoming "Bargain".

'Superwoman'

Van Tramp Rocks Pop and R&B

Listening to the pop/rock band Van Tramp, you'd think this band was just another homegrown band out of a small town in the U.S. Actually frontman Tim Howar is from Canada, and the rest of the band is from London. Either way they're an act to look out for, and their self-titled album is currently out.

Their take on Rihanna's "Umbrella".

And here's what "No Air" sung by Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks sounds like solo.

Boys of Summer

Shot last year at LA's Nokia Theatre, John Mayer does a lovely rendition of "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

When UK's Dizzee Rascal paid Jo Whiley a visit, the rapper, known for his gritty rhymes and hard beats, took on The Ting Tings' "That's Not My Name".

Not too sure where these Jersey boys summoned their inner Shania Twain, but on the Burnin' Up Tour the Jonas Brothers have added I'm Gonna Getcha to their nightly set.

Jack White's Ode to Rock City

Opposed to what's been said in the past, Jack White of (The White Stripes and The Raconteurs) loves Detroit, and he proved it with a poem in Sunday's (July 6) Detriot Free Press. He may have moved to Nashville with wife Karen Elson in 2006, he writes about the city that he loves. Visit the Free Press to read the entire poem plus an intro by the paper's pop music critic Brian McCollum.

The Vines 'Rocker'

They're greatest hits album didn't really make too much of a splash, but their new record Melodia may put The Vines in the right light again. Though it's not available for a few more weeks, you can preview the entire album on the band's MySpace.

Here's the video "He's a Rocker"—the first single off of Melodia

'One for the Radio'

McFly shows just how well they can do on their own with their new video for "One for the Radio". Filmed in Toronto, the video shows what a shockwave of radio can do to a person — with Danny, Dougie, Tom and Harry playing on a rooftop above it all. The guys are currently promoting their new label and new single around the UK and will be playing their own set (July 24) for the iTunes Festival.

Like I posted last week, McFly will be dropping their new material for free via the Mail on Sunday.

MGMT Hit Studio in January

Brooklyn's MGMT broke ground with their debut, Oracular Spectacular, last year. And now they're ready to get back into the studio for their follow-up effort. "We're definitely ready to start working on some new stuff," Andrew Van Wyngarden told BBC 6Music. "I think in January we’re gonna start recording and hopefully put an album out next summer." I'm sure this will be a record worth waiting for.

Free UNKLE Available Today

Fine so we won our independence from the Brits today, but that doesn't mean we can't listen to their music. In honor of UNKLE's new release (available digitally on July 15), End Titles...Stories for Film, the band is releasing a free tracks on their website. You can download and preview "Synthetic Water" on their site.

US Court Ruling Releases YouTube Info to Viacom

Beware YouTube viewers. A US court ruling has ordered Google to release user information including usernames, IP addresses and viewing habits to Viacom. After a lawsuit the media company (which owns MTV) brought in 2007, Viacom claims that copyrighted videos it owns have been viewed 1.5 billion times thru Google's recently acquired YouTube. This move could potentially rock the way music fans view or listen to their favorite acts.

'Beating My Heart'

With a trimmed look and a poppier sound, Jon McLaughlin looks like he has a hit with this new video.

Get 'Meldoia' Today

The album may not be coming out till the end of this month. But you can pre-order The Vines' Melodia album and get it by July 22. It's available for the U.S./Canada, UK (out on July 14) and Australia.

Jay-Z Taps Oasis and More

Although there were tons of highlights at this year's Glastonbury, one memorable moment that'll probably stay with me will be Jay-Z's cover of Oasis' "Wonderwall". Besides the fact it's one of my favorite tracks, who would've thought that Jay-Z would tap his inner Gallagher, especially after Noel didn't approve of the rapper's appearance at the festival.

Meanwhile back on American soil...

Ok who knows what Phantom Planet's Alex is doing on the guitar. But this is his attempt at covering Punjabi MC's ""Mundian To Bach Ke", not too sure if it's a successful one.

Meanwhile The Love Guru flexes his pipes with his own version of Extreme's "More Than Words".
